Is It OK to Leave a Contractor Alone in Your House?
The Bell Team · October 2026 · Last reviewed
Short answer
Often, yes. Plenty of homeowners give a lockbox code to a contractor they've vetted and trust. Whether it's OK for you depends on the job, the contractor, and what you set up before they walk in.
This guide is about your house when you're not in it. If you'll be home alone with a contractor, that's a different question, and we cover it in contractor safety tips for women living alone.
Do most people leave contractors alone in the house?
Lots of people do, especially on multi-day remodels where nobody can take a week off. It's less common on a first visit with a company you've never used. The difference is trust that's been earned: a license you've looked up where the trade requires one, insurance you've seen, references you've called, and work you've already watched them do.
When is it reasonable to leave a contractor alone?
- You've used the company before, or you've met the person running the job.
- The scope and price are in writing, so there's nothing to decide while you're gone.
- You've confirmed their license (for electrical, A/C, and plumbing work in Texas) and their insurance. Here's how to verify a contractor license in Texas.
- They only need the rooms where the work happens.
When should someone be home?
- Diagnosis and quote visits. The plumber finds a second leak, the HVAC tech offers three repair options. Someone needs to hear it and say yes or no.
- First visits with a new company. You haven't seen how they work yet.
- Jobs where the price can change once walls, panels, or pipes are opened.
- Pets who can't be put away, or a house where the crew needs more than one room.
- Anything that felt off when you booked: vague answers, pressure, or a different name than the one you were given.
How do I set up the house before I leave?
- Put away medication, documents with personal information, jewelry, and anything sentimental. Our 5 things to do before a contractor visit covers the walk-through.
- Close doors to rooms they don't need, and say which bathroom they can use.
- Use a temporary door or lockbox code you'll change afterward, not your everyday one.
- Crate or board pets, and tell the contractor where they are.
- If you have indoor cameras, tell the contractor. It's courteous, and it sets the tone.
- Agree on how they'll reach you, and what happens if they find something new.
What should I ask for before they leave?
- Photos of the finished work, and of anything they found along the way.
- A written summary of what was done and what's still open.
- Any change to the price or scope, in writing, before the extra work starts.
What if you don't want to leave them alone, and can't be there?
That's the gap Bell was built for. Your shift can't move. Your Bell Rep can. A Bell Rep arrives before the service provider, verifies their ID and credentials, works through a visit checklist on your behalf, and sends you photo updates during the visit. When it's done, you get a summary of what happened. See what a Bell Rep does.

Quick answers
Should I give a contractor a key or a lockbox code?
If you do, use a temporary code you can change after the job, not your everyday one, and give it only to the person running the job.
Which visits shouldn't I leave a contractor alone for?
Diagnosis and quote visits, first visits with a company you haven't used, and any job where the price or scope might change once they open things up.
Is it rude to have someone at the house during the job?
No. Contractors work in occupied homes every day. Having a person on site gives them someone to ask when a decision comes up.
